Temecula Valley:
The Southland is on the Rise Again

by Clark Smith
August 24, 2009

As the California State Fair announced its Varietal Best of Class and Sweepstakes Best of Show awards for 2009, not a single Napa wine was listed. What region garnered the most medals? That would be the Temecula Valley. A secret renaissance is taking place among the thirty-nine producers who call “land of the Rainbow Gap” home.

Ohio: Oldest Brand-New Appellation in America

The wine regions of Ohio have provided us with overwhelmingly convincing proof that their venerable status as world class players is well deserved. If your taste runs to classic vinifera wines of aromatic intensity and good acidity, I cannot name a region in the New or Old World which offers such varietal and stylistic diversity, whether you’re in search of a special collectible for your cellar or a jolly good drink that will amaze tonight’s guests.

Texas boasts 177 wineries, up from 40 less than a decade ago, a whopping 300 percent increase. Like the size of Texas, wine’s economic impact in the state is huge, at $1.35 billion, making Texas number five in U.S. wine production from 3,100 vineyard acres in eight American Viticultural Areas (AVAs).

Q: What is an appellation?
An appellation is a winegrowing region with officially recognized boundaries. Appellation designations are required on wine labels to identify the origin of the grapes used in making the wine. Vineyard locations rather than winery locations determine appellation.

Because in North America we are in the process of defining our growing areas, there are two classes of appellations. Political boundaries (states, provinces and counties) are still used for some, but increasingly, appellations defined by geographic boundaries based on topography, climate and soil types are receiving government approval. These geographically based appellations are known as American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in the U.S. and Designated Viticultural Areas (DVAs) in Canada.
